The Mediterranean basin is home to a high diversity of Orthotrichaceae (Ros et al., 2013, Hodgetts & Lockhart 2020). In this biodiversity hotspot (CEPF), 68 species and varieties of this family are found, 83 % of all those known in Europe, North Africa and the Near East. Of these, 15 species are endemic or almost exclusively found in this biogeographic area.

List of all species and varieties recognised on the European continent and neighbouring territories.Species only found, or practically restricted, to the Mediterranean area are highlighted in bold. Taxa reported from countries of the Mediterranean basin but not living in territories with a Mediterranean climate are marked with the symbol (✓).
